Oct 2: Octavius Catto Mural @ UICS

A tribute to civil rights activist Octavius Valentine Catto.

Join students, staff, and other community members at Universal Charter School to dedicate Remembering a Forgotten Hero, a new mural honoring Octavius Catto, the late 19th-century civil rights activist. This project from artists Willis Nomo Humphrey and Keir Johnston engaged local students and members of the Restorative Justice Guild in learning about Catto’s life and struggles.

Tuesday, October 2, 11 a.m.–noon

Universal Institute Charter School
1427 Catharine Street

An educator, athlete, and activist, Catto was assassinated on South Street in 1871 after pushing for voting rights for black citizens. Remembering a Forgotten Hero is the first mural to honor Catto.
